Revised Paragraphs, Project 3

These are two of the literacy narratives that I looked at from Rising Cairn that were perfect examples of teachers that have made students feel like victims in their high school classes. When going through all the victim narratives that I saw in Rising Cairn about teacher to student relationships, I noticed that a teacher can have a huge impact on how students do in that subject. If a student has a bad teacher and is taking the same class as another student that has a good teacher the grades are going to be a lot different, since when a student has a bad teacher they are less likely to complete the work that is needed for that class. When looking at other victim narratives, I am able to relate it to my own which was me in sophomore year of high school, in my writing management class. I had a teacher that dislike me very much and she did not treat me very well since I was a very talkative student. So when I would raise my hand in class she would choose other students over me. This made me not want to do her homework since I didn’t like her class. In the long run that was a very bad idea because it affected my grade dramatically.

The literacy narratives that I have chosen from Rising Cairn, were chosen because I believe they are a perfect example of what students should look at when talking about a victim narrative. In these specific scenarios, the students were put in tough situations by their teachers were they felt like they were not being treated the way the should have been. In Alexander/Brandt/Williams quotes above it perfectly describes the way people are treated if they have been put in the role of a victim. I noticed when reading the views of the students, that the teachers had a huge impact on a students education. If a student had a teacher that made them a victim then they were less likely to perform to their highest standards. I think the Nathan’s Literacy Narrative agrees with the texts from Brandt. Nathan was liking english and looking forward to sophomore year when he had that joy taken away from him do to bad teaching. Nathan would talk about how when the teacher doesn’t like you, that you can become an outcast in the class. “Such students, Paterson noted, often wrote about themselves as being invisible or used metaphors about being unclean or outcast from the world of literacy.” (Brandt) He does an excellent job of describing the way that Nathan felt in his english class. In Taylor Lacey’s Literacy Narrative, she talks about how she struggled with learning throughout school and she couldn’t keep up with the other kids in her class and she would be “tagged” for it. She was told that she had to learn another language and she couldn’t do it since she had a learning disability. I think that this is somewhat of a victim narrative and the reason for this is because she didn’t have the choice to not become the victim in this case. She didn’t make herself that way, she was born into it.
