In Gee’s first theorem he talks about how if a person has a certain discourse they don’t have to be good at that discourse they just have to know how to do it. You either no how to do it or you don’t. He says that their really is no in between. He compares it to a person speaking a different language. A person can still speak and language just not as good as other people. But a person can try to learn a new language and completely not no how to learn it.

In Gee’s second theorem it involves the fact that a Primary discourse can not be a literacy. A primary discourse is learned when you are young it is usually the first thing you are learned how to do. When you are raised in a certain community, your parents and the people you are around give you a certain discourse. Your primary discourse stays with you your entire life even if you are taking on a different discourse, you will always have your primary discourse.
